DJ Drama has solidified himself as the “DJ Clue of the South” to many of his peers and artists alike. His first studio album, “Gangsta Grillz The Album” had the feel of a true mixtape that was being sold in Best Buy. It’s overall success laid the foundation for a sequel, and this time around, Drama enlisted the heavy hitters to help him.
Gangsta Grillz 2 starts off with a salute to Atlanta, with ” A Town”, where Grand Hustle’s T.I, Young Dro, along with Sean Paul and Lonnie Mac trade verses over the beat.
On paper, this album should be one of the better dropped all year. The roster enlisted by Drama is impressive. Unfortunately, for the most part, most of them seem uninspired in their delivery, and the result is a lot of tracks that wouldn’t make their own personal albums, but good enough for a compilation disc.
Some of the bright spots include “Yacht Music”, which Willie The Kid, Nas and Scarface blend their diverse styles perfectly over the beat, while the melodic sounds of Marsha Ambrosius smooth it out all out. “I’m Fresh” and “Smoke” also are highlights, however “Pimpin Ain’t Easy” and “Tipper Love” could’ve been left off.
Overall, if you enjoy compliation albums and buy for namesake only, pick this up. However, substance wins over style, and that is what this edition of Gangsta Grillz is missing.
