WeLoveHipHop.com will be doing a spotlight interview each month on a star on the rise in the industry who you may not know now, but should get familiar with. We start things off with a DJ who has made quite a splash in her short time on the scene. DJ Blazita has been moving crowds since her college days, and after winning the 2008 JUSTO Award for Best Female Mixtape DJ, Blazita seems ready for a repeat performance.
WLHH: Of the albums that dropped Last Tuesday(5/19/09), which ones are you checkin for?
Blazita: I’ve heard Eminem’s album ,but I was kinda disappointed there were no real hits on that album. I heard a few tracks from the Meth and Red too, definitely feelin it.
WLHH: Growing up, what DJs did you look up too?
Blazita: Early on, I was checkin for Funkmaster Flex, the 60 Minutes of Funk mixtapes, and DJ Clue, with his “BackStage” mixtapes, I still check for. At the time I was growing up, I was in Ohio, so I wasn’t into the whole New York scene, but those two were big influences. Once I started going to concerts though, Kid Capri became my favorite.
WLHH: How do you think that internet game has changed it for DJs?
Blazita: Its made it harder for us to connect with artists, because they have taken promotions into their own hands, and with albums leaking, we dont have the same connections we had with other artists. On the other hand, we have an unlimited access to a wide range of music, so we can support we choose. It also makes it better for us, because we can see these artists on the come up, and see their grind.
WLHH: With the momentum of winning the JUSTO Awards heading into this year, what are some accomplishments you have made in 2009?
Blazita: Ive been real focused on club bookings now, and have been traveling around in Philly, New York, and Miami next month spinning. Now, Im starting to work on some larger scale mixtape projects with some major artists, such as the one I did with Clap Cognac in February, and the mixtape I did with Cassidy’s people, Larceny Family. I’m currently working on a mixtape with new artists from Ruff Ryders as well, so things are looking good. I’m also going to be unleashing my artist, Daath Nix, this summer too.
WLHH: For those up and coming DJ’s looking to try to break into the game, what advice would you give them?
Blazita: I would say mixtapes are your main venue. You can promote yourself, and while I think some people feel mixtapes are irrelevent, I am living proof that mixtapes still work. Also, be consistent, if you wanna do this and really wanna make it, you gotta keep working.
WLHH: Now for some word association. I’m gonna drop some random words, tell us the first thing that comes to your mind.
